Frequently asked questions

What is Ásatrú?

Ásatrú is a modern revival of the ancient Norse pagan religion, centered around the worship of the gods and goddesses of the Norse pantheon, such as Odin, Thor, and Freyja. It emphasizes a connection to nature, ancestral heritage, and community, often incorporating rituals, blóts (sacrificial offerings), and sumbels (toasting ceremonies). Practitioners value concepts like honor, courage, and loyalty, and many see it as a way to reconnect with their Viking and pre-Christian roots. Ásatrú can vary widely in practice and belief, reflecting personal interpretations and local traditions.

How do you worship the gods and goddesses?

There are many different ways a practitioner can worship the gods and goddesses. Our central ritual is called blót, which is a symbolic sacrifice, usually with mead, food, or other meaningful objects. We also conduct sumble, which is a drinking ritual in which participants take turns making toasts to the gods, ancestors, and heroes. Many practitioners also set up an altar, spend time outdoors to feel more closely connected to the gods, participate in seasonal festivals, practice daily devotions or prayer, and finally living with virtue. Virtues such as courage, honor, and self-reliance are inspired by the gods and living with these values is a form of honoring the gods.

How do you join the ITA?

Becoming a member of the ITA requires a kindred to reach out to us with their intention, at which point members of the ITA will screen the kindred with a phone call and sometimes a review of social media accounts. This allows us to get to know each other to ensure the kindred is the right fit for the ITA. We have many children involved in the ITA so we like to make sure our members have the necessary character to keep our children safe. We do not judge on the basis of background or lifestyle, but we do aim to keep our organization as virtuous as possible.

What can the ITA do for me or my kindred?

The Independent Tribes of Ásatrú can help you establish or grow your kindred by providing the necessary guidance and framework you require. It is not easy finding like-minded individuals with the character required to be successful. The ITA also helps by giving you a community with which to grow and nurture your relationship with the gods. We also conduct monthly rituals called blót that will be live-streamed on our Facebook page and YouTube channel so you can rest assured that you are not alone on your journey.
